Chakwera meets XI

President Lazarus Chakwera on Thursday held his inaugural meeting with the People’s Republic of China President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the 15th BRICS Plus Outreach Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa.

During this meeting, President Chakwera conveyed his gratitude for the consistent and valuable assistance provided by the Chinese Government to Malawi.

Chakwera extended his gratitude to the Chinese Government for last year’s debt relief and also acknowledged China’s commitment to support the construction of the Judicial Complex.

The Malawi leader also mentioned China’s support towards construction of the House of Parliament, Malawi University of Science and Technology, and Bingu National Stadium.

He thanked China for the humanitarian assistance in the aftermath of Cyclone Freddy and the expansion of the agricultural product portfolio that Malawi exports to the Chinese market under favourable trade terms.

“There is no doubt in my mind that our discussion today will go a long way in strengthening the friendship between our two countries, the partnership between our two Governments, and the brotherhood between our two parties,” said Chakwera.

On his part, President Xi acknowledged Malawi’s unwavering support of the One-China Policy and Chakwera’s leading voice at BRICS and other multilateral fora advocating for the interests of developing nations.

Xi, who has extended an invitation to Chakwera for a State Visit, also committed to support Malawi’s efforts to build resilience against climate shocks and achieve developmental aspirations.

The BRICS Plus Outreach Summit convenes leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, alongside invited African heads of State and Government, fostering discussions on shared concerns and exploring avenues for collaborative endeavours.
