Chakwera launches tree planting season in Dowa

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera on Friday launched the 2021/2022 National Forestry Season at Dowa Secondary School.

On his arrival, the President first visited Mpanda Hill Weeding and Planting Site where he and the First Lady, Madam Monica Chakwera, planted trees and cleared weeds.

The Malawi leader also took time to dance with Ingoma dancers from Dowa.

Speaking to the cloud Chakwera said it is incumbent on citizens and residents to sustain the beauty and environmental health of the country.

He said the new Malawi being built is not just about development and economic prosperity but environmental sustainability too.

Chakwera also applauded development partners that are supporting the country’s efforts in restoring ruined landscapes.

The President said the country is losing its forests at an alarming rate of one percent per year and has flagged this as a cause for worry.

This year Malawi targets to plant 40 million trees.
