President Lazarus Chakwera has arrived in Accra, Ghana today for 30th Afreximbank Annual Meetings and 30th Anniversary.
The President was welcomed by Ghanaian government officials including High Commissioner to Malawi Khadija Iddrisu.
Chakwera is on a visit to Ghana on invitation by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) which is holding its 30th Annual Meetings.
Chakwera told the media on departure that the annual meeting, heads of state and governments from member countries will share notes on the progress, challenges and future of the bank established 30 years ago.
Chakwera’s trip is a fulfillment of the assurances he gave the International Monetary Fund (IMF) team that he will personally engage the bank to map the debt repayment plan
.
The IMF wants to know how the country intends to sustainably restructure the debt, which it inherited from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government before it can qualify for the Extended Credit Facility (ECF).
Most of the external debt the country is grappling with is from Afreximbank and the Chinese Government.
The Chinese Government is also financing the President’s visit to China at the end of this month where apart from discussing the debt restructuring plan, Chakwera will be the Guest of Honour at the China Africa Expo.
The 30th Afreximbank Annual Meetings 2023 will be held at Accra International Conference Centre from 17 to 21 June under the theme “Delivering the Vision, Building Prosperity for Africans.
