Chakwera Cripples Veep Chilima’s Delegated Powers

Over his alleged involvement in corrupt activities initiated by United Kingdom Based Malawian businessman Zuneth Sattar, Vice president Saulos Chilima will not be seen in public officiating duties delegated to him by President Lazarus Chakwera.

Addressing the Nation last evening, president Chakwera said this will remain so until Chilima is cleared of being implicated in Sattar’s corruption activities as it is alleged in the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) report.

According to Chakwera, he reached the decision of withholding any delegated duties to Chilima because the Constitution does not provide for his “suspension or removal from it by the President, because he holds that office by the will of Malawian voters, which I respect.”

The Malawi leader continued that he is waiting for the bureau to “substantiate its allegations against him and to make known its course of action in relation to such.”

On June 1, 2022 Chakwera directed the ACB director General Martha Chizuma to serve his office within 21 days with a report after some top officials in his government including the vice president were named to be involved in Sattar’s corruption dealings.

When his name appeared on the UK list, Chilima refused to comment on the matter, Face of Malawi is yet to hear from the vice president on President Chakwera’s decision.
