Malawi leader Lazarus Chakwera and his vice Saulos Chilima met publicly for the first time since the alleged domino effect which has rocked the Tonse Alliance the two are leading.
The two attended the country’s 58th Independence Day celebrations which took place at Bingu International Conference Centre (BICC) in the capital Lilongwe, which were in form of prayers.
Two weeks ago president Chakwera crippled delegated powers of Chilima after his name was mentioned in Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) report for allegedly being involved in corrupt activities with British-Malawian businessman Zuneth Sattar which was submitted to him (Chakwera).
Since then, the two have met in camera at least once during a meeting of all nine leaders of Tonse Alliance partner parties at the Kamuzu Palace in the capital city.
Barely days later, Chilima delivered a public statement in which he accused Chakwera of betraying several elements in their UTM-MCP electoral pact including one on passing him the baton in 2025.
Several critics have described the VP’s address last Friday as the beginning of the end of the two Tonse Alliance main partners’ cooperation.
