Lilongwe City Council and Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiative (Cdedi) have expressed satisfaction with Central Poultry’s compliance with waste management measures in the wake of cholera outbreak.
Speaking yesterday after touring the company’s Dude Poultry Compound in Lilongwe, Cdedi executive director Sylvester Namiwa said they wanted to inspect the facilities to ensure they are complying with hygienic requirements.
Lilongwe City Council closed Dudu Farm on January 3 2023 after it was discovered that the company had established a manure composting centre within the premises which was declared a health hazard.

The company was also faulted for the way it was managing rotten chicken waste which turned the place into a health hazard.
But the company reopened the centre three days later, which prompted Cdedi to demand an inspection.
Said Namiwa: “We are pleased now that the company has shut down the centre and removed the waste.
“This is crucial as the country is experiencing a cholera outbreak which has claimed over 1 000 lives.
Lilongwe City Council director of health and social services Jorlex Kamtokoma said the company was responding well to the recommendations.
“Central Poultry has cleaned the composite making centre and removed heaps of chicken waste which had turned the place into a breeding ground for flies,” he said.
Central Poultry staff development and on-board specialist Temweka Kazembe said they complied with all issues concerning waste management.
He said: “We are now hiring vans to transport waste to dumping sites. The waste is placed in sealed black bags to avoid polluting the air.”
