The Catholic Bishops under the banner of the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) have blasted ongoing infighting in the Tonse Alliance under President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, saying this is a recipe for disaster.
The Bishops said this in a letter read out in all Catholic Churches commemorating the 30th Anniversary of the Catholic Bishops Pastoral letter which was issued on 8th March 1992 tilted ‘Living by Faith’.
In the letter, the Bishops said there is an urgent need for the alliance partners to draw up joint programmes of action for the remainder of the government term including creating a management frame work for the alliance to bring cohesion and direction in the political space.
“We have noted with concern that since 2020 Fresh Presidential Election which ushered new leadership, the country is engulfed in endless political bickering especially among the political groups that comprise the Tonse Alliance.
“The bickering projects to the public, a lack of cohesion within the alliance and a sense of no direction. These feed to popular discourse and fuel an atmosphere of uncertainty and instability which has disastrous economic effects,” reads in part the letter.
Turning to Judicial system in the country, the Bishops have pleaded with the Judiciary to to always act with integrity guided by the principles that govern this notable profession.
“We stand with and applaud those who risk everything by standing up for corruption, describing them as shining examples of ST.Paul’s exhortation,” added the letter.
Tonse Alliance partners are yet to comment on the letter.
