Bullets fans introduce player of month award

Mzuzu-based Nyasa Big Bullets fans have introduced player of the month awards effective July.

The team’s versatile defender Gomezgani Chirwa was the first winner and he received K50 000.

The group handed over the money at Mzuzu Stadium on Wednesday after the team’s 2-0 win over Ekwendeni Hammers in the TNM Super League.

In an interview yesterday, the supporters’ representative Chancy Ngwira said the awards are separate from those sponsored by insurance brokers Hubertus Clausius Malawi.

He said: “What we are doing is not attached to what the club is doing. This is our initiative as Bullets supporters in Mzuzu where we want to be recognising individual brilliance each month. This is the beginning and it will be carried out throughout the season.”

Reacting to the development, Bullets supporters’ committee general secretary Archibald Kasakura welcomed the arrangement, saying supporters have a role in motivating players.

“This is the way to go.  It is one way of motivating players and it also demonstrates the role that supporters play in the game of football,” he said.

Chirwa, who has been instrumental for both the club and the Malawi Flames expressed gratitude for the recognition.

The full-back was among key players in the Flames’ squad for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

In the team’s awards sponsored by Hubertus Clausius Malawi Limited, Patrick Mwaungulu won the  June award while Chimwemwe Idana was the winner in May.

The award goes with K100 000 cash prize.
