Bullets close in on title

Nyasa Big Bullets are a point away from a record 16th TNM Super League title following a 2-0 victory over Mighty Tigers at Mpira Stadium in Chiwembe Township, Blantyre yesterday.

Babatunde Adepoju’s first half goal and another from Patrick Mwaungulu in the second were all they needed to reach 64 points.

The People’s Team are just a point from the maximum 65 points their closest title contenders  second-placed Blue Eagles can reach if they win their remaining two matches.

Eagles have played 28 games while Bullets have played 27 and have a game against Moyale Barracks on Sunday.

A draw in the match will be good enough to clinch the title since they have a superior goal aggregate of 42 against Eagles’ 24.

If the People’s Team draw in their next three matches, Eagles will have to score 19 goals in their remaining two matches to leapfrog them on goal difference.  That also will depends on Bullets failing to score in their remaining games.

But coach Kallisto Pasuwa said it was too early to start picking up calculators to pronounce how many points they need to win the title.

He said: “We still have three games to play. We will talk about the next game against Moyale Barracks when the time comes.”

Interestingly,  Moyale stunned Bullets’ rivals Mighty Mukuru Wanderers 1-0 at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre through a Brown Magaga first half goal.

The loss further dented coach Alex Ngwira’s record.

It was a second consecutive league loss for the coach after the Nomads also suffered a 1-0 defeat to Blue Eagles at Nankhaka in Lilongwe two weeks ago.

Ngwira attributed the loss to players’ burnout.

He said: “I would say fatigue and injuries contributed to today’s loss. You can see that some players are not here because they are injured. We didn’t start well. We started on a very passive note and we were not our usual self.”

Moyale coach Pritchard Mwansa said they will aim for another win as they face Bullets on Sunday.

He said: “If we maintain the way we played today, we will have a good game against Bullets on Sunday.”

In other TNM Super League matches, Mafco hammered Karonga 5-0 at Chitowe Stadium in Dwangwa, Nkhotakota.

Alexander Sukwambe netted a brace while the other goals were from YohaneMalunga, Richard Mbulu and MphatsoFilimoni.

Kamuzu Barracks beat relegated TN Stars 2-0 at Champions Stadium in Dowa.
