Barely two years after President Lazarus Chakwera reprimanded Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) board for holding a capacity building orientation in Dubai for two weeks, the regulatory body is at it again.
It has taken 11 people including Minister of Information Moses Kunkuyu, two members of parliament and a secretary from parliament to Egypt to attend a global symposium for regulators from June 5 to 8, 2023
The legislators are Joshua Malango and Ishmael Rashid, both members of the media, information and communication committee.
Others on the trip are parliament secretary Isabel Tambala, Macra board chairperson Stanley Khaiya, Macra board member Malta Kawale, Macra director general Daud Suleiman, Macra director of Economic Regulation Andrew Nyirenda, director of Telecommunications Edward Kauka, deputy director of legal services Daniel Chiwoni and head of universal service fund Ronald Tembo.
Sources say the trip could have been attended by at least two people.
The sources also say most of the officials on the trip are unnecessary.
In June 2021, Chakwera slapped Macra for spending over K46 million in Dubai for a two week orientation.
