Brace for Minibus Fare Hike

Commuter transport operators have been asked to be considerate in making fare adjustments in reaction to the recent fuel price hike.

The Minibus Owners Association of Malawi (MOAM) is citing economic woes currently burdening the people as a factor that should be taken into consideration by those who may wish to raise their fares.

Over the weekend, the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) Board effected new pump prices for petrol, diesel, and paraffin with an average 22% upward adjustment.

After over a month of public speculations, the MERA Board finally took the decision largely considering recent trends in global petroleum products prices.

Referring to MERA’s lower-than-projected price hike, MOAM Secretary-General, Coxley Kamange, contends that any sharp increase in transport fares would have no justification.
