The romance between Malawian music prodigy Med Cee and US-based promoters Magic Fingers Entertainment LLC has come to a sour end.
After news of the termination of the contract was confirmed by both parties yesterday, the two parties have entered into a blame game.
Magic Fingers Entertainment LLC, which is co-owned by US-based Malawian Tionge Mhango and Nigerian producer Oluwaseyi Shizzi Akelere, has laid the blame on the 18-year-old artist.
Good old days: Med Cee (L) and Mhango
Mhango said in an interview from his base in Atlanta: “From his conduct during our recent projects, it was clear that we were not operating on the same wavelength. We thought it wise to free him so that he can seek opportunities of growth elsewhere.”
He said what broke the camel’s back was the artist’s failure to show up for a scheduled video shoot on two separate days, which cost the company in excess of K1 million.
The company said they wish the music upstart well in his future artistic endeavours and has committed to pay his fees until he completes secondary school as stipulated in their agreement.
On his part, Med Cee said his sin was to ask for an allowance for a video shoot session, which choreographers hired for the production of his video were receiving.
“I don’t understand what wrong I have done. Previously I have done things that I thought maybe Tionge will release me from the contract, but he never did. For this case, I don’t understand why he has made such a decision,” he said.
The dancehall artist, born Medson Kapeni, also accused the US company of not fulfilling some of the promises in their initial agreement such as officially signing the contract and paying his monthly upkeep.
Under the stewardship of Magic Fingers Entertainment LLC, Med Cee released two singles and videos, Complaining and Money Maker, which according to the artist cost his management team K4 million.
He said they have also funded the recording of over 3o singles which are yet to be released. Med Cee said he is now looking for assistance to release an album.
Last evening he was due to release another single titled Nde Mwamva.
The artist will sit for his Malawi School Certificate for Education at Martin Luther Private School this August.
He was previously under the wings of Patience Namadingo’s Namartists label before another public fallout. FDH Bank plc also entered into a K2 million two-year contract with him which also did not end well.
