The Blantyre derby between rivals Nyasa Big Bullets and Mighty Wanderers will mark the kick-off of the 2022 TNM Super League season.
The two rivals clash on March 19 in the season’s opener at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre, according to first round fixtures released by Super League of Malawi (Sulom) yesterday.
Sulom general secretary Williams Banda said all was set for the season to kick off.
He said: “Now that the fixtures are out, clubs can now start preparing for their opening matches. We wish them all the best.”
Kamwendo, Ng’onamo (C) and Albert confer during the friendly match against KB
Bullets assistant coach Peter Mponda said he was confident that by then, the team will be ready to launch a title defence.
In an interview after defeating Silver Strikers 1-0 in NBS Bank Charity Shield, he said they still have work to do to prepare for the season.
Mponda said: “We have a number of new faces in the squad. Some have been promoted from our reserve side. The players need time to jell. Hopefully by the time the league kicks off we will be ready.”
Meanwhile, Wanderers defeated fellow Super League side Kamuzu Barracks (KB) on Saturday and lower league side Nselema FC on Sunday in pre-season friendly matches.
Newly-appointed technical director Eddington Ng’onamo said they still need to fine-tune their team ahead of the season kick-off.
The Blantyre-based giants have also reshuffled their technical panel which is now headed by Ng’onamo.
The former Flames coach has replaced Bob Mpinganjira.
Bob’s brother Albert, who was the first assistant coach, has been demoted to second assistant coach.
Joseph Kamwendo is now the first assistant coach and Simplex Nthala is the third assistant coach and physical trainer while Foster Namwela has been maintained as team manager.
