Battle for ACB Director Appointment Powers Rages on in Parliament

In parliament, Machinga East Member of Parliament Esther Jolobala asked President Lazarus Chakwera if he was willing to reduce his powers in relation to the appointment of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) director-general.

Jolobala reminded the President of his earlier promise to reduce his powers and ensure that the ACB director was not appointed by the President.

In his response, President Chakwera reiterated that he is not responsible for making laws and that changing a law is a process that requires the involvement of Parliament.

He went on to say that such matters are not subject to presidential decree but rather require a thorough review of the law in view of the many challenges faced by the country.

The President also stated that there are still checks and balances built into the system.
