Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) elective general assembly will take place between April 29 and 30 at a yet-to-be-identified venue.
Justice of Appeal Sylvester Kalembera, who is the chairperson of the care-taker committee which the Malawi National Council of Sports appointed to handle the AAM constitution amendment and election process, disclosed this in an interview yesterday.
The committee has since come up with a draft election calendar leading up to the polls.
The calendar released yesterday shows that the process will begin with the receipt of nominations for various regional committee positions between February 23 and March 1 before the vetting of regional candidates on March 4.
Kalembera: We will call for nominations
Kalembera said: “After the Mzuzu Half Marathon on March 5, the South will hold its athletics elections on March 11. The Centre will have its polls on March 18 while the North will do it on March 25.
“National committees will have their polls on April 1 and we will call for nominations of candidates for executive committee [ex-co] positions on April 10.
“Vetting of candidates for national ex-co will be done between April 23 and 24. After the EGM, a report on the process will be issued between May 1 and 4 before its submission to the council on May 5.”
The development comes after the embattled AAM ex-co and Sports Council last week agreed to work together towards conducting the general assembly after months of disagreements.
Meanwhile, Mzuzu Golf Club is this Saturday set to host the National Cross Country Championship, team leader of athletics operations Drake Chithambo has said.
“All athletes wishing to compete in the competition are welcome. The event will begin at 7am,” he said.
Athletes will compete in various categories, including the 10-kilometre seniors men and women and eight-kilometre juniors’ sections.
