Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) has called 10 athletes into camp to start preparations for 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games in UK.

AAM acting general secretary Mzee Makawa said in an interview on Saturday that the camp is scheduled to start today, will be done periodically to keep the athletes in shape until they go for full time camp towards the games.

The athletes are Stern Lifa (100 metres (m) and 200m), Asimenye Simwaka (200m and 400m), Mphatso Nadolo, Nalicy Chirwa (marathon), Allan Chirwa, Abubakar Mkwanda and Sunganani Namakunje (400m and 800m), Chikondi Mwanyali (3 000m and 5 000m), Farook Mponda (400m) and Ayiche Mtambalika (throws).

Long-distance runners Kefas Kasiteni (marathon) and Fostina Mbemba (5 000m) are on reserve.

Coach Francis Munthali will take charge of middle and long-distance runners while Pachisi Nyasulu will drill sprinters.

“We would like to start

preparations early so that we can monitor them ahead of the games. Some of them will have a chance to compete at international games,” said Makawa.

He said the athletes were selected based on consistent performance in previous local and international competitions, including the National Cross-Country held on Saturday at Gymkhana Golf Course in Zomba.

 The Malawi national netball team started camp last week for the Games.

Meanwhile, Judo Association of Malawi has announced that three male judokas and three female Judokas have been selected to join the first camp training in preparation for the games.

The association’s general secretary Ousborne Banda said the athletes Harriet Boniface, Vera Benjamin, Olivia Chikwapula, Chikondi Kathwera, Mussa Silence and Austin Chikwapula will start camp today in Lilongwe.

He said said: “We selected the athletes based on the recommendation from the technical director Mr Evance Chikumbu. They were selected on merit based on their previous performances in both local and international competitions.”
