Residents of Area 47 in Lilongwe in collaboration with Global Landscapes Forum Lilongwe Chapter, Lilongwe City Council and Reunion Insurance Company Limited on Saturday planted about 1 000 mibawa (mahogany) trees along Lingadzi River as part of the Lilongwe Ecological Corridor initiative.

Speaking on behalf of Lilongwe City Council mayor, Chinsapo Ward councillor Lynord Chakakala Chaziya Jnr said residents should be in the forefront in restoring the lost green glory of the city.

He said: “Let me ask each and every resident of Lilongwe to plant trees in their localities. In addition to getting fresh air from trees, they also help us in the socioeconomic development of the country.”

Chaziya urged stakeholders in the ecological space to take part in tree-planting exercises.

Reunion Insurance Company risk and compliance manager Salome Ndala said being a people-centred company, they decided to take part in restoring vegetative cover on the banks of Lingadzi River.

She said: “We work with people of Lilongwe and our offices are also based here in the city which automatically makes us residents. So, we believe it is our obligation to take part in the tree-planting exercises and contribute in bringing back the lost glory of the city.”

One of the residents, Emmanuel Chimkwita-Phiri thanked the partners and asked for more trees as the Lingadzi restoration project needs about 7 300 trees.

The Lilongwe Ecological Corridor project aims to restore the nature of Lingadzi riverine.
