Seasoned artist Giddes Chalamanda would not have asked for a better start to the New Year than a visit by charity movement Ana a M’mudzi which donated various items to him on Saturday.
Among the items donated to the Liny hit-maker were groceries, foodstuffs and clothes which included a fashionable grey suit for the veteran musician and for his wife Abiti Alafuledi.

Part of the donation, valued at K300 000, also included three huge picture frames bearing Chalamanda’s pictures during his visit to the United States of America in 2016. One of the portraits had a picture of Chalamanda and Fatima Nkata, who is the founder of the charity organisation.
Chalamanda thanked the youthful team for the gesture.
“Not many people remember an old man who is in the village. Very few people can do this. What you have done is a huge blessing to my household and we are very grateful. Don’t start and stop with me, extend the same to others in need,” he said.
A representative of Ana a M’mudzi, Murimu Kachitsa said their visit was made in the spirit of giving back to an individual who has given the Malawi nation a lot through his art.
She said: “Here is a man who has made a vast contribution through his music. He has entertained us across generations. It is equally amazing that even in his old age, his music continues to break new boundaries. That shows he is a true legend and needs to be celebrated.”
Kachitsa said people such as Chalamanda need constant support and she urged individuals and organisations who have the capacity to reach out to people who are in need such as the ageing artist.
Ana a M’mudzi is an initiative under a charity movement called Namasina Mwana Wa M’mudzi, which is championed by US-based Malawian, Fatima Nkata.
