Activist Pemphero Mphande Faults MHRC for Nodding to Out-of-Court Settlement in Blessing Nyondo’s fatal shooting

Renowned Activist Pemphero Mphande has faulted the Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) for its recommendation to close the case of the fatal shooting of Blessings Nyondo at compensation, rather than prosecution.

State-run Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) is set to compensate the slain youth’s family with an unspecified amount for his death after he was shot by the broadcaster’s security guard on 31 December 2020.

It is said that the guard opened fire after mistaking Nyondo, who died on 8 January 2021, for a highway thief.

MHRC Spokesperson, Kate Kujaliwa, has confirmed that MBC authorities have agreed to an out-of-court settlement to compensate the deceased Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) student’s family.

Meanwhile, Mphande, insists there is a need to prosecute the security guard, stressing that MBC’s acceptance to compensate is an admission of guilt.
