ACB reacts to Chilima’s case dropping

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has come out its cocoon to react to a decision by the state to drop a corruption case involving Vice President Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima.

The state through Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Masauko Chamkakala applied to court last week to have Chilima’s case dropped and Judge Redson Kapindu on Monday issued a certificate of discontinuance on the matter.

But Speaking in an interview with the press ACB Public Relations Officer Egrita Ndala said the bureau was ready to proceed with the case.

“The bureau was ready to proceed with the case, but the DPP has overall legal powers to discontinue any criminal matter in the country,” said Ndala.

The remarks from the bureau has attracted mixed reactions with many claiming that the office of the DPP acted on its own without consulting ACB Director General Martha Chizuma.

Meanwhile, Chamkakala has said he consulted the bureau before the decision to drop the case was made.
