Newly constructed MK75 million Governance to Enable Service Delivery (GESD) funded boys’ hostel at Mzenga secondary school in Nkhata-Bay has developed severe cracks making it inhabitable.
Chairperson for the education service committee at Nkhata-Bay district council, councilor Acran Chenya has blamed the district public works office for allegedly not conducting routine supervision and inspection of the project besides receiving numerous complaints from community members about poor works.
Director of public works, Elias Mkandawire has admitted that the hostel was poorly constructed, however he says the council has already agreed with the contractor to re-do the construction works at his on expenses starting from Friday, and that learners will have to be relocated to a temporary shelter.
Governance expert, Undule Mwakasungula has described the situation as unfortunate saying it is not necessary for the council to reengage the contractor on the project instead of investigating how the MK75 million for the project was utilised.
In a letter dated 19 May, 2023 to Nkhata-Bay district council signed by managing director of Pyramid Contractor, Abel Chiumia; the company has accepted to maintain the problems as soon as possible. (ZBS)
