Storm survivors get relief food, items

Asian Muslim Relief Aid (Amra) and Road to Relief Foundation have donated relief food and non-food items worth K100 million to 3 500 households affected by Tropical Storm Ana in Nsanje District.

The items include maize flour, beans, sugar, milk, pots and soap.

Speaking when they presented the donation on Sunday in the district, Amra team leader Aamir Jakhurah said they donated the items because the survivors were in need of humanitarian assistance.

He said: “We are covering 18 camps between Bangula and Marka. We are working closely with the Department of Disaster Management Affairs and Nsanje District Council.

“Our intention is primarily to respond to their immediate needs, but we have a second programme which seeks to help people return home.”

Jakhurah said they will support the people to replant crops and to repair their homes.

Road to Relief Foundation chairperson Rosemary Davis said they partnered Amrato reach many people affected by the storm.

She said: “We want to empower the survivors to recover from the disaster.

“We fundraise to help people regardless of religion, political affiliation or gender.”

Davis said in 2019, they raised funds to support Cyclone Idai survivors in the country.

“We distributed food, blankets and buckets to over 1 200 displaced households,” she said.

A camp chairperson in Bangula, Richard Malunga thanked the two organisationsfor the donation.

He said there were 2001 people in need of food at the camp.

“We appeal to other well-wishers to help us with resources to go back home to start normal lives,” he said.

President Lazarus Chakwera declared a State of National Disaster following the devastation caused by Tropical Storm Ana last month
