Southern Region Water Board (SRWB) says it will continue conserving the environment and has pledged to plant 100 000 trees during this year’s National Forestry Season.

SRWB acting board chairperson Samson Kawalazira said this on Monday in Zomba during the launch of the board’s 2022 Tree Planting Season at its catchment area around Mulunguzi Dam on Zomba Mountain.

He said trees are crucial in water formation as well as protecting soil erosion, which is common in the rainy season.

“The board is set to also protect and manage these trees prudently,” Kawalazira said.

Zomba City Council mayor Davie Maunde said the rainfall pattern has changed due to the impact of climate change.

He said: “The city council commends the board for taking bold steps in restoring and managing natural environment. 

“This is impressive and must be emulated by all other stakeholders on this mountain.”

Senior Chief Malemia said in collaboration with the communities, they will complement the board’s initiative in the management of the trees.

“These trees, if well managed, will reinforce successful production of potable water by the board at all times,” he said.

Officials from the Malawi Defence Force, Malawi Police Service, Sunbird Ku Chawe, civil society organisations, youth clubs, the media, chiefs and communities took part in the tree-planting exercise.
