Pacific Group of companies is set to repair over 80 non-functional boreholes in Blantyre City.

In an interview yesterday, Pacific Group Borehole Rehabilitation Project team leader Abdul Majeed Allie said the company is targeting to repair broken boreholes in at least six constituencies in the city.

He said: “We started the works on January 5 2022 and we are expected to finish by February end.

“So far, we have finished repairing boreholes in Blantyre City West and Blantyre City East constituencies and we are now in Blantyre City South East.”

In random interviews, residents commended the project, saying the boreholes are an alternative to tap water whose supply has become erratic in recent times.

Mary Njolomole from Nkolokoti in Blantyre City East, said she used to wash her clothes at South Lunzu River whenever taps went dry.

“But now we will get  water for laundry from the borehole,” she said.

Traditional Authority Somba in Blantyre City West urged people to take care of the boreholes.

“It is expensive to repair boreholes,” she said. 

In a separate interview, Blantyre City West legislator Steve Mikaya said Pacific Group of companies is complementing government’s efforts to provide clean water to people.

The company has repaired over 5 000 boreholes in Blantyre City since 2015.
