No electoral violence,Nice tells Thyolo people

National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust has advised political parties in Thyolo District to desist violence ahead of the September 16 2025 General Elections.

Thyolo district Nice programme officer Moses Kaunda made the call on Thursday during a meeting with Thyolo Multi-Party Liaison Committee on peace-building.

The meeting brought together political party leaders from various parties, chiefs, religious leaders, police, civil society organisations and other influential people to discuss how the district can nurture peace and avoid violence in the run-up-to the elections.

Chisoti speaks during the meeting

Speaking during the meeting, Kaunda stressed the importance of a peaceful environment in the district, calling all political party leaders to refrain from violence and acts that entice violence such as burning of party flags and materials.

He said: “Peace is of paramount importance because it ensures development. When there is violence, people cannot participate in development activities, including taking part in election.

“Since next year we are having tripartite elections, let me ask you all to join hands and say no to anything that can instigate violence in this district.”

Kaunda said the district is prone to violence during elections; hence, calling on stakeholders to engage people on the same.

Thyolo Police Station officer-in-charge Francis Chisoti said the meeting gave them an opportunity to design strategies on how they will handle political violence ahead of the election.

He warned perpetrators of violence, saying police will not condone them.

UTM Party member Charles George, who spoke on behalf of other parties present at the meeting, described the meeting as insightful.

He advised political party followers to join hands in developing the country instead of inciting violence.

Nice held the meeting with funding from the European Union under Boma Lathu Project
