Police in Mchinji at Mkanda have confiscated a two-tonne truck carrying flu-cured tobacco suspected to be heading to Zambia.
Yesterday another two-tonne truck carrying burley tobacco was seized in Namitete, also suspected to be bound for Mozambique.
Tobacco Commission Spokesperson, Telephorus Chigwenembe told stating that several trucks carrying tobacco have been intercepted while attempting to leave the country.
He assured that the Tabocco Commission and Malawi Police will continue to monitor and prevent illegal tobacco trade in all three regions of the country.
The anti-illegal tobacco trade monitoring exercise aims to curb the illegal export of tobacco, which is a significant contributor to Malawi’s economy.
