Traders importing goods that would attract at least $3,000 (about K2.4 million) in duty can afford a smile following commencement of duty-free week, Sunday.

This follows gazetting of the Customs and Excise Regulations of 2022 by Minister of Finance Felix Mlusu.

The period ends on January 29 2022.

Marketing and Communications Manager for Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA), Wilma Chalulu, confirmed that the gazette has been implemented by their officers from Sunday.

“The authority will only put into consideration goods that are crossing into the Malawi border within the aforementioned days.

“People should also note that they need to have a Tax Payers Identification Number. This applies to old Tax Payers Identification numbers as well as newly registered ones. Further, the initiative is strictly for the goods that are arriving into the country this week,” Chalulu said.

The Customs and Excise Regulations of 2022 indicates that the duty-free week, one of the leading campaign promises by the Tonse Alliance during the 2020 presidential elections, only applies to those that have Malawi National Identification numbers.

“Notwithstanding the provisions of the Act, during any duty-free week, certain goods may be imported free of any import duty, import excise and import valued added tax to which such goods would, but for the provisions of these regulations, be liable,” the regulations read.

However, some Malawians took to social media to raise concerns that rolling-out of the duty-free week did not give them enough time to buy goods in time to benefit from the initiative.
