Gaba plays down top form

South Africa-based Malawian forward Frank Gabadinho Mhango has played down his rich vein of form, saying the priority is to help his club Moroka Swallows survive the chop in the DStv Premiership.

The Flames striker scored a goal and set up the other as the Dube Birds beat Stellenbosch 2-0 on Saturday.

To put an icing on the case, the 31-year-old was named man-of-the-match, his second accolade in three matches.

But in an interview yesterday, Mhango said: “I have reached a point whereby I have to give something extra to help my team survive relegation.

“To me, that is the priority for now other than my good form. It will count for nothing if I score in every game and I am named player-of-the-match in successive matches, but in the end we find ourselves fighting relegation.”

The goal has taken the former AmaZulu FC, Pirates, Bidvest Wits, Lomontville Golden Arrows and Bloemfontein Celtic forward’s tally to seven goals in the league and eight overall this season.

He is eight goals behind leading scorer Tshegofaso Mabasa of Orlando Pirates.

Despite the win, Swallows remain 13th in the 16-team top-flight league, two steps above relegation.

They have 32 points from 28 games with two more games to play. They are a step above Royal AM, who trail them by three points, but with a game in hand.

Royal AM are coached by Mhango’s compatriot John Maduka.

Richards Bay, the club that another Malawian forward Khuda Muyaba plays for, are second from the bottom with 27 points. They also have to games before they wind up the season.

Richards Bay boosted their flickering survival hopes with a shock 1-0 win over Orlando Pirates on Saturday.

Mamelodi Sundowns already defended the title by winning it with four games to play. They have 66 points, 16 above second-placed Stellenbosch.
