Illovo Sugar Malawi (plc) has donated medical equipment to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital Cancer Unit valued at K22 million.
During the handover in Blantyre , Illovo Sugar Malawi managing director Lekani Katandula said the donation followed a request the hospital’s head of oncology Dr Leo Masamba made last year in September.
The immediate-past Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry president appealed to the corporate world to assist the government in the fight against cancer.
“With the figures from the cancer unit that they do have 400 cases a week and sometimes 200 cases a day, there is a great need for individuals and companies to join hands with the Government in the fight against cancer,” he said.
In his remarks, Dr Masamba commended Illovo Sugar Malawi, saying the hospital needs help to care and treat cancer patients.
He cited inadequate medical personnel, space for clinics and wards whereby only 45 spaces are available to admit patients.
