Malawi Red Cross Society has pledged to support flood survivors in traditional authorities

(T/As) Kanyenda, Mphonde and Malengachanzi in Nkhotakota District to get back to their feet.

Red Cross director of programmes and social development Prisca Chisala said this on Sunday when the organisation distributed non-food items worth K125 million to the survivors.

“When we heard reports from the Department of Disaster Management Affairs [Dodma] that some districts have been affected by floods, including Nkhotakota, we started mobilising non-food items to support the affected population,” she said.

Dodma chief disaster preparedness officer Natasha Mbengo assured people who lost their homes that they will be allocated new land to settle.

“The district council and Dodma will help such people relocate to new sites,” she said.

Speaking on behalf of Nkhotakota District Council, Siliro Magomero said the support came at the right time when many people in evacuation camps are in need of help.

He said: “We have over 12 923 people who have been affected by floods in T/As Kanyenda, Mphonde and Malengachanzi while four have died in Dwangwa.

“We are still appealing to different stakeholders to support those people.”

Some of the non-food items Malawi Red Cross Society distributed to the survivors include kitchen sets, sleeping mats, tents, hygiene kits, soap and solar lamps valued.
