United States of America (US) Ambassador David Young has retired from public service after a 34-year career.

A press statement issued by the US Embassy dated January 12 2024 indicates that Young is retiring with immediate effect.

Young: Serving here was an honour

In the statement, Young says serving as an Ambassador to Malawi has been one of his greatest honours.

He says: “I am proud of our work together to save lives and change lives for good and I know that the US-Malawi partnership will continue to endure.”

Young adds that he wants to be educating future leaders, saying, “I want to help make a difference educating and inspiring future leaders and I want to begin this new service now.”

Amy Y Diaz has since taken over as Charge d’affaires, and, according to the statement, she will serve in that position until a new ambassador is nominated by the White House, confirmed by the Senate and arrives in the country.

Young presented his letters of credence to President Lazarus Chakwera in May of 2022.
