The Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (Magla) on Saturday sensitised communities around Lizulu Trading Center in Ntcheu District to the risks associated with unregulated gambling.
Speaking during the event, Magla licensing and compliance manager Mirriam Kumbuyo said through the toll-free line Tikankhule 4252, they have been receiving complaints about the prevalence of unregulated gambling, also known as Wachiona ndani, in local markets.

She said: “We have launched the campaign here at Lizulu Trading Center, recognising it as one of the hubs for the gambling activity known as Wachiona ndani.
“It’s crucial for people to understand that gambling should be viewed as a form of entertainment rather than a means of generating income.”
Kumbuyo said winning is based on chance and that there is no guarantee of success whenever people gamble.
On his part, constable Jonathan Mangulenje of Lizulu Police Station said unregulated gambling has been one of the significant factors contributing to numerous marital breakdowns and the loss of businesses.
