ESCOM says national blackout not linked to fired employees

The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) has refuted claims suggesting that today’s nationwide blackout is an act of sabotage orchestrated by disgruntled employees.

Allegedly, these employees are protesting against the dismissal of their colleagues who participated in protests advocating for a salary increase in the wake of Kwacha’s devaluation.

ESCOM public relations manager, Kitty Chingota, says engineers are attempting to detect the cause of the blackout and rectify the problem.

On Tuesday the country experienced a national wide power cut and ESCOM attributed it to system shutdown.
