Police in Nkhotakota is keeping in custody a 46-year-old truck driver for allegedly being found in possession of cannabis sativa, locally known as Chamba, without permit in the lakeshore district.
Public Relations Officer for Nkhotakota Police Paul Malimwe, has identified the suspect as Charles Domoya who hails from Chanthunya village under Traditional Authority Nsamala in Balaka.
According to Malimwe, the suspect was arrested in the early hours of 5 November 2023 at a local primary school in the district which is located some kilometres away from the district’s famous Kaombe road block, meaning that, the suspect who was driving a truck registration number KA 5902 which had a trailer MJ 7115, had already managed to beat the system at the road block.
The driver who had carried four big bags of the illicit drug, weighing 215 kilograms, mixed with bales of sugar from Dwangwa direction in the district heading Salima district, was arrested following a tip-off.
Domoya will soon appear in court to answer the charge of being found in possession of cannabis sativa, contrary to Section 8 subsection (b) of the Dangerous Drug Act.
