Fpam promotes reproductive health in Kasungu District

Family Planning Association of Malawi (Fpam) programmes manager Gerald Maulidi has expressed satisfaction with how Women Integrated Sexual Health (Wish) project has contributed to increased access to sexual and reproductive health services in Kasungu District.

Speaking during a stakeholders meeting on Tuesday, he said key performance indicators show that the project has achieved its intended objectives.

Said Maulidi: “We targeted the youth and women of childbearing age and as we bid farewell to the project today, we are happy to see youths playing a crucial role in generating demand for sexual reproductive health services.

“Our services also attracted huge patronage, especially in hard-to-reach areas where we conducted outreach clinics. We proudly say we have saved a lot of women and girls from unwanted pregnancies.”

Maulidi, however, expressed concern that some myths and religious beliefs pose a big barrier to initiatives in the target groups.

“Going forward, we will rely on the cluster committees and youth groups for the sustainability of the activities of the ending project,” he said.

Ministry of Health chief reproductive health officer Blair Sibale said it was sad that the project was phasing out when it contributed in providing friendly reproductive health services.

He said the ministry will work hand in hand with Kasungu District Hospital to sustain the activities initiated by the project.

Kasungu district family planning coordinating officer Alufeyo Chirwa hailed the project for “saving youths from unwanted pregnancies”.

“The youth have completed their studies without hiccups because of the trainings that were conducted under this initiative,” he said.

The Wish project started in 2019 in Chamama, Santhe, Mtunthama and Kasungu District Hospital clusters.
