The Liwonde First Grade Magistrate Court has sentenced 20-year-old Halilu Awali to 11 years imprisonment for the offence of having sexual intercourse with his 4-year-old sister inlaw.

The Court heard that on 7 October 2023, the victim’s mother went to pursue small scale business in the area of Masese Village, Traditional Authority Mlomba in Machinga, leaving the girl in custody of her sister who is married to Halilu Awali.

The sister then went out to draw water at a stream, leaving the victim in custody of the husband who later on defiled the child and threatened to kill her if she dared to reveal to anyone.

The child reported the mater to her mother who immediately reported to Ngodi Police Unit and medical report issued by Ngodi Health Centre confirmed that the girl had really been defiled, leading to the arrest of the suspect.

Magistrate Lawrence Mangani slapped him with 11 years imprisonment with hard labour.

Awali comes from Masese Village, Traditional Authority Mlomba in Machinga District.
