Community members in Senior Chief Kilupula in Karonga District have commended Sparc Systems Limited for constructing two classroom blocks worth K65 million at Kiwe Primary School.

Speaking on Saturday during the handover, group village head Gwereweta said the classroom blocks will motivate children to go to school.

“I urge parents and traditional leaders to encourage children to go to school and take care of the 320 desks they have donated,” she said.

Kiwe Primary School management committee chairperson James Mpola said the school, which opened in 1963, has 1 232 learners.

“The new classroom blocks will decongest classrooms. However, the school has shortage of teachers’ houses and toilets,” he said.

The school’s head teacher Christina Kalua said the school blocks will reduce absenteeism and school dropouts.

“Learning in a good environment will also motivate learners to perform better,” she said.

Sparc Systems Limited chief executive officer Wisely Phiri, who is the school’s former learner, said he learned about the shortage of desks and classrooms last year when he visited home for the tombstone unveiling ceremony for his mother.

“I am who I am today because of this school where I learned from Standard One to Standard Eight and got selected to Chilumba Secondary before I was selected to Polytechnic [now Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences] where I studied engineering,” he said.

Phiri urged community leaders to take care of the school blocks and desks to serve generations to come.
