Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) has secured rights to beam all the 52 matches of the Total Energies Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals in Cameroon starting with the opening games today.
The State broadcaster’s director general George Kasakula confirmed the development yesterday, saying the soccer fraternity deserves to enjoy the continental championship in the comfort of their homes.
“I can confirm that we are going to beam the matches. We have the rights to broadcast all the games but we shall plan, considering that the matches are many. We have our own schedule to show as many games as possible with those involving Malawi being the priority,” he said.
Nevertheless, Kasakula appealed to the corporate world to partner the public broadcaster in the initiative.

to enjoy the games
He said: “Let me make it very clear that the rights are very expensive. So, we need partners to come on board with support. Moreover, this is the best platform for them to display their products and services as many Malawians will be watching the games very keenly.
“In fact, for the past few weeks we [MBC], and I personally, have been getting calls from the general public asking if we would broadcast the matches, saying they depend on us. So, we have managed to get the rights and we need as many sponsors as possible because there is value for money with many Malawians watching the games.”
The development comes after digital satellite television services providers Multi-Choice Malawi announced last month that it would broadcast all the matches through its SuperSport and GOtv channels.
The Afcon finals will run from today up to February 6.
Apart from watching Malawian players such as Frank Gabadinho Mhango, Khuda Muyaba and Richard Mbulu, Malawians should also brace for entertaining football from a galaxy of world-class stars such as Mo Salah (Egypt), Sadio Mane (Senegal), Naby Keita (Guinea), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Gabon), Riyad Mahrez (Algeria), Kelechi Iheanacho (Nigeria), Wilfried Zaha (Ivory Coast) and Trézéguet (Egypt).
There are six groups of four teams each and the Flames are in Group B where they will face Guinea’s Syli Nationale tomorrow before taking on Zimbabwe’s Warriors on Friday. They will wrap up their group fixtures against the continent’s top-ranked team Senegal’s Teranga Lions on January 18
