Suspected thief beaten to death in Chitipa

Angry people in Chitipa District on Sunday killed a 30-year-old man suspected to have stolen a motorcycle in the district.

In an interview on Monday, Chitipa Police Spokesperson, Sub Inspector Gladwell Simwaka, identified the deceased as Steven Mwafulirwa of Thabiro Village, Traditional Authority (TA) Mwirang’ombe, Nyungwe in Karonga district.

Simwaka explained that on Sunday, Mwafulirwa and his accomplice Chaoneka Kumwenda, 31, of Mwakashunguti Village, TA Mwirang’ombe went to Chitipa Business Centre where they hired a motorcycle to escort them to Kameme in the district.

“On the way, the two suspects hijacked the rider and robbed him of the motorcycle. The victim informed his fellow motorcycle operators who followed the robbers and managed to arrest one of them whom they assaulted to death,” he said.

According to Simwaka, the law enforcers have managed to arrest Kumwenda and is waiting to appear before court soon to answer a charge of theft.

The motorcycle has since been recovered.
