Man Slapped 3 Years Imprisonment For Burglary And Theft In Dowa

The Senior Resident Magistrate Court sitting in Dowa Mkukula  has sentenced a 21-year-old man, Eliya Kumatse to 3 years imprisonment with hard labour for burglary and theft.
State prosecutor, Sub Inspector Patrick Mandanda of Kanengo Police Station  has identified the convict as Eliya Kumatse.
Mandanda told the court that on August 3, 2023, at around 02:30 hours, the convict broke into Benard Phiri’s house in Nambuma where he stole two plastic drums and other items worth K146,000.00.
He further told the court that the 70-year-old victim was tipped by well wishers who helped in apprehending and taking the suspect to Mtema Police Unit.
Appearing in court, Kumatse pleaded guilty to the charges; burglary and theft but asked for the court’s leniency saying he is the bread winner for his family.
In his submission, prosecutor Mandanda prayed for a stiffer custodial sentence stating that the offenses committed are serious in nature.
Passing the sentence, Resident Magistrate Montfort Misunje concurred with the state and sentenced Kumatse to 3 years IHL for the first count and one year IHL for the second count saying the two should run concurrently.
Eliya Kumatse hails from Chalenga Village, Traditional Authority Kayembe, Dowa District.
