The World Food Programme (WFP) has reduced its food allocation to refugees in the country from 75% to 50% with effect from 1 August 2023.

Minister of Homeland Security, Ken Zikhale Ng’oma, announced this in Lilongwe. While appealing for support, he said the development is due to global financial challenges.

‘Government is already under pressure to feed its citizens so the reduction of food supply to the refugees will have a great impact. Currently, the government has food that will support the refugees up to 31 December 2023,” said Ng’oma.

The minister has also disclosed that the number of refugees and asylum seekers who have expressed interest to return to their countries has risen from 53 to 98.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Homeland Security has issued a fresh seven-day ultimatum to all the refugees and asylum seekers that have gone back to cities and trading centres after being relocated to return by 16 August.
