South-West Region Police have arrested Ian Chingwiza Mbewe, aged 30, for allegedly stealing a motor vehicle and obtaining money by false pretence.

Public Relations Officer for the region, Beatrice Mikuwa, says on July 19, 2023, Chingwiza hired a VW Jetta on self-drive basis, but later used it as collateral to obtain a 700,000 Malawi Kwacha loan.

Mikuwa says the suspect also provided a fake blue book and a fake sales agreement to convince the money lender.

She added that after the owner noted that Chingwiza was not coming out clearly about the vehicle’s whereabouts, he reported the matter to police who arrested him and recovered the vehicle in Chilomoni in Blantyre.

According to Mikuwa, the suspect is in police custody as investigations are underway.
