Police Probing Officers in Controversial Shop Raids Involving Business People of Rwandan Descent

Malawian police are investigating officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) who, along with unknown civilians, raided two shops owned by business people with Rwandan origins but Malawian citizenship.

Malawi police spokesperson Peter Kalaya has confirmed the development saying the incident occurred at Salima Turnoff in Lilongwe, where it is alleged that the officers collected money, allegedly exceeding K100 million.

“We have seen the video and we are investigating the matter,” he said.

A CCTV installed in one of the shops captured the incident.

The business people were arrested and charged with illegal stay in the country, despite having valid documents.

The investigation is ongoing, and the money taken has not been recovered yet.
