Defence Team Sets To Re-examine Plaintiffs On Same-Sex Marriage Case

The Constitutional Court sitting in the high Court in Blantyre in will continue hearing the same sex law case Today on 18 July 2023 this morning.
The defense team led by Fostino Maele will today re-examine their client in the case, Wim Akster
This is day two of a possible three day trial in a case where two individuals, Akster, a Dutch national and Jana Gonani who is a transgender from Mangochi, are asking the court to allow same sex marriages in the country.
At the moment, Malawi criminalizes same sex unions.
Meanwhile, the state will parade one witness in court as this has been confirmed by the Attorney General, Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda.

Yesterday, Akster told the court he is heterosexual saying “I’ve been in sexual relationships with women”.

He was responding to an inquiry by state lawyer Victor Jere who had asked him “what’s your sexual orientation?
