Woman fined K120,000 for wounding stepchild

Midima Third Grade Magistrate Court in Limbe Thursday fined Margaret Banda, 24 K120,000 for wounding her seven year-old stepdaughter.

Confirming the development on Monday, Limbe Police Public Relations Officer, Aubrey Singanyama said the court heard through state prosecutor, Mathews Jumbe that on May 5, 2023, Banda accused her stepdaughter of stealing cooked beans and as part of punishment, Banda inflicted serious injuries on the victim’s hands.

“The incident was brought to the attention of the village leader, who promptly reported it to Nkolokoti Police unit. Following a medical examination that confirmed deep burn wounds on the victim, police arrested Banda,” he said.

The Police Publicist added that appearing before the court, Banda pleaded guilty to the charges but requested a lenient sentence, citing her role as a breastfeeding mother, but the state prosecutor lobbied for a tough punishment, to deter other would-be offenders.

Magistrate, Catherine Daudi imposed a fine of K120,000 on Banda of which K80,000 is designated as compensation for the victim, while K40,000 will be deposited into the government coffer.
