Mzuzu City MP hands over projects to communities

Mzuzu City legislator Bennex Mwamlima on Tuesday handed over a classroom block worth K29 million to communities at Chibanja North Primary School in the city.

The project was partly financed by the school’s development fund with about K24 million contributed by Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Mwamlima said he decided to support the construction of the project, which was initiated by the community, to fast-track the completion of the structure.

“This school has inadequate school blocks, as such some learners use makeshift structures which are life threatening,” he said.

Mwamlima advised the community and learners to protect the structure from vandalism.

He also appealed to non-governmental organisations, the private sector and the business community to consider supporting the school and other primary schools in the constituency.

Mzuzu City Council chief education officer Mercy Mayuni commended Mwamlima for the structure, saying it will motivate teachers and learners to achieve quality education.

“Let me advise the Parents, Teachers Association, School Management Committee and mother groups to ensure that the school block is well taken care of,” said Mayuni.

In her remarks, Chibanja North Primary School head teacher Laureen Mwenda called for more blocks at the school because some learners still use makeshift classrooms made from timber.

Earlier in the day, Mwamlima handed over five water kiosks at  Kanthete worth about K8 million financed by CDF.

“We are yet to construct three more water kiosks to promote hygiene and sanitation as we strive to fight against waterborne diseases,” he said.
