Nyungwe United Football Club from Karonga district has been involved in a fatal road accident which has claimed 17 lives, leaving 12 others in serious injuries after the vehicle they were travelling in overturned in Tenenthe Hills in Karonga District.
Confirming on the development, Sergeant George Mulewa, Public Relations Officer of Karonga Police Station said the accident which happened on Saturday night involved players and supporters for Nyungwe Football Club.
He said the passengers who were 80 in total, were travelling in a ten-tonner lorry registration number NA 6449 driven by Moes Mkandawire,43.
The team was returning from the 2023 FAM Moto Division One match against Chitipa Hammers football club played at Jombajomba football ground in Chitipa district.
“The accident happened on June 3, 2023 around 8 pm. The driver and the passengers were coming from Chitipa heading to Karonga district and upon arrival at Tenenthe, the driver failed to negotiate the left bend as a result the vehicle overturned after hitting the road embarkment.” He said
He said 17 people died on the spot due to severe head injuries and fractures while 12 others escaped with different degrees of injuries and are currently receiving treatment at Karonga District Hospital.
“At the moment our traffic officers have rushed to the hospital to get more information as investigations are still underway to get full details of the others. Once that is done, we will come back with an update.” Indicated Sergeant Mulewa
According to Sergeant Mulewa, the driver for the vehicle, Moes Mkandawire hails from Mchekacheka Village,Traditional Authority Mwilang’ombe in Karonga district.
