The Japanese Government has today donated three refrigerated Toyota Land Cruiser vans worth MK240 million to the Ministry of Health.
Minister of Health Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda received the donation from Japanese Ambassador to Malawi Yoi Shi Oya, during a function that took place at Capital Hill in Lilongwe.
The ambassador said the effects of Covid 19, cholera outbreaks and cyclone Freddy have put pressure on the health system hence the support.
“We are supporting government to recover from the devastation of the outbreaks and the cyclone and strengthen the health systems,” he said.
Chiponda said the vehicles will be used to transport vaccines across the country.
“With so many competing priorities, we are overwhelmed and we are grateful for this support. We needed transportation to transfer vaccines as you know we are carrying out an expanded Programme on Immunization,” she said.
She has since warned drivers not to take advantage of the refrigerated vehicles to transport other goods such as fresh fish.
