Police in Mchinji have arrested a 38-year-old woman on allegations that she dumped her month-old daughter.

Mchinji Police Public Relations Officer Limbani Mpinganjira on Sunday identified the suspect as Chisomo Kawira from Chinsapo Township in the area of Traditional Authority Malili in Lilongwe.

According to Mpinganjira, Kawira reportedly separated with her husband due to family misunderstandings.

On the morning of May 13, 2023, Kawira allegedly climbed a long brick fence and entered the compound of her ex-husband’s parents in Mchinji, where she left the baby girl inside the fence before bolting.

The cries of the baby being harassed by a dog, were heard by a maid who promptly rescued the infant.

Upon receiving the report, the Police swiftly apprehended the mother and later released her on bail, considering the best interests of the child.

Mpinganjira said Kawira is expected to appear in court soon to face the charges levelled against her.
