M’Mbelwa District Council says it will scale up its interventions to contain the further spread of the cholera outbreak in Mzimba District.
Speaking in an interview on Friday during the launch of Tithetse Kolera Campaign, the council’s district water officer Jacob Mkandawire said government allocated K7 million towards the campaign in the district.
“You may recall that President Lazarus Chakwera launched the Tithetse Kolera Campaign in February in Lilongwe to curb the spread of the disease.

“As a council, we have established a district task force to coordinate the implementation of activities which target Mzimba Boma, Jenda and Ekwendeni trading centres as they are considered hotspots,” she said.
Mkandawire said the task force comprises water, sanitation and hygiene representatives, the private sector and non-governmental organisations.
“Among the activities include cleaning up markets and disseminating cholera prevention messages in hotspots in the district,” he said.
Mzimba District Civil Society Organisations Network chairperson Christopher Melele asked people to participate in the campaign.
“I ask people to observe good sanitation in our homes and work places, including markets,” he said.
Melele thanked organisations such as United Purpose, Malawi Red Cross Society and Northern Region Water Board for supporting the district’s fight against cholera.
As of Saturday, the country had cumulatively registered 56 552 cholera cases and 1 719 deaths.
The Ministry of Health encourages people to seek medical care when they feel cholera symptoms.
